Ways of [Machine] Seeing

Collaboration with Ricebox Studio

Role
Branding, editorial design, presentation design.
Ways of [machine] seeing, inspired by John Berger's influential work Ways of Seeing, is a growing collection of classroom activities that helps art and design teachers explore image-based AI safely and creatively. Developed with secondary school educators and researchers at the Centre for the Study of the Networked Image at LSBU, the project offers quick, low-tech exercises that spark discussion generative AI and art and design.

Ricebox Studio created the visual identity, built and designed the website, activity grids, and produced the printed guidebook and PowerPoint deck for teachers to use.

Bounding-box graphics were used to echo computer-vision UI, icons from Noto and open-source typefaces keep the resource free to remix. Everything is released under Creative Commons, turning advanced technology from a sealed system into an open studio for every classroom. Teachers can also update the site with their own content in the future.

The project culminated with a launch at The Photographer’s Gallery and here are some reflections from the event
